Symphony Chorus of New Orleans (SCNO) is an all-volunteer chorus that has provided superlative choral music to the greater New Orleans area for more than 35 years. In addition to local productions of choral masterworks like Handel’s Messiah and Orff’s Carmina Burana, SCNO has also appeared in New York’s Carnegie Hall performing the Fauré Requiem (2007), Dvorak Te Deum and Memley Magnificat (2015).
In 2016 the chorus travelled to Florence, Italy to perform the Schubert Mass No. 2 in G Major with the Orchestra da Camera Fiorentina. The chorus has also a variety of popular, R&B, and jazz-based New Orleans music, including premieres of Wardell Quezergue’s A Creole Mass (2000) and Passion (2011).
A ten-year collaboration with Singers of United Lands (SOUL) vocal quartet has enriched the lives of numerous elementary, middle, and high school students through educational outreach and festival performances of multi-cultural choral music of 40 countries in 34 different languages.
Under the direction of SCNO Music Director Steven Edwards since 1990, the chorus has enjoyed critical acclaim for the quality and variety of its programs, earning numerous Gambit Magazine “Tribute to the Classical Arts” awards, and recognition at the 2009 Community Arts Awards by the Arts Council of New Orleans.
In preparation for the tricentennial anniversary of the founding of the City of New Orleans in 2018, Steven Edwards with Symphony Chorus of New Orleans has been putting together a set of pieces about New Orleans and Louisiana. The project includes standards like Basin Street Blues, and Do You Know What it Means (to Miss New Orleans?) along with more recent selections like Randy Newman’s Louisiana 1927 and music for the Disney movie The Princess and the Frog. Edwards has arranged some of the pieces himself, and turned to chorus members and other local musicians for new arrangements of this repertoire.
